Sewing techniques and threads
You can sew all the seams by hand if you wish, but sewing machines and even overlockers can be used. Straight stiches and simple zig-zag can be used on hemlines and other visible seams, but overlocker should only be used when sewing seams that aren't visible on the right side of the garment.
You can use polyester threads, since they don't look especially modern and don't make a fire hazard as such. Polyester is more easily obtainable as well as more durable and simpler to use.
You shouldn't use machine embroidery stitches. You can decorate your garment with the following techniques:
- Use a heavy thread, such as wool, embroidery or pearl cotton or thin copper as the underthread. Loosen the thread tension on both the upper and the lower thread and sew so that the underthread will be on the right side of the cloth. This easy technique can be varied a lot by choosing different threads and motives.
- You can also add a thicker thread on a ready-made seam. Place a thick thread of your choice on the fabric and sew it in place with zig-zag stitches. You can use a contrasting colour or a one similar to the thick thread.
Always test these techniques first on an extra piece of fabric before sewing on the actual garment!
