Frequently asked questions

Welcome to the FAQ! Any questions you have should be answered here. If you do not find the answers you are looking for you could opt to send a mail to info (@) dragonbane.org and we will consider adding your question. Some of the questions presented may seem redundant, unnecessary or bizarre to you. Please remember that Dragonbane is drawing participants from around the world. We've found that what is common place or common knowledge in one larp culture is completely foreign in another larp culture. This FAQ is intended to provide each participant with the same basic understanding of the Dragonbane larp regardless of what larp culture they come from.

Please bear in mind that a FAQ is a living document and will evolve to address additional questions as they arise.

1.1 How do I sign up?
You can sign-up using the participation form. Please note that this is the only way to sign-up and you will be required to provide a valid e-mail address. [Back]

1.2 How much will the event cost?

Please read the full details from Payment section of our site.

[Back]

1.3 What language will the event be in?
Each of the factions allows for the use of any language a participant knows. The primary language for the event will be English. Please note that all the game material will be in English. Translations into several languages will be available on the web site but it is recommended that you either have some ability with English yourself or work with someone who does to ensure you have all the information you need. [Back]

1.4 When is the last day I can sign up to participate?
April 30th, 2006 [Back]

1.5 What age limit is there for participants?
None, but people under 18 years of age need permission by their legal guardian to attend and a designated guardian on location is necessary for anyone going without their legal guardian(s). Concerned parties can find further information about Dragonbane in regards to children in the For Parents document.

Children, like adults, will be expected to be able to handle the whole larp in character without issues that will detract from the event for other participants. [Back]

1.6 Who can attend this larp?
Anyone can take part that has the spirit to make this a great event. You will be asked to commit to a high level of accuracy in your costume, speech and attitude. This will mean everyone working together to present a certain feel and atmosphere that will carry the idea of Valenor into a living breathing world. The organizers reserve the right to reject any application, and/or deny participation if the organizers deem the participant negative to the project.

The decision of the organizers cannot be appealed. [Back]

1.7 Will I be able to bring my pre-existing larp company to Dragonbane?
Dragonbane will not be accepting pre-existing larp companies. The Dragonbane larp has been created with only three groups, or factions as we call them. We feel that quite often a person confuses their character identity with their group identity. As Dragonbane will be a larp with 1000+ participants and we'll only have three factions we hope to encourage character creation and identification on the individual level.

While pre-existing companies will not be eligible to participate we hope that the individual members of these companies feel welcome to participate. [Back]

1.8 Will a group of OOC friends automatically play a group of IC friends?
No they will not. Each participant signs up individually and works with a Character Developer to create a character of a faction and temperament that will provide the best event for them. No groups other than the factions (Cinderhill, Dragontamers and Witches) will be allowed in-game. [Back]

1.9 Can I play together with my family?
If you wish to play with your family and your children are minors, you have to keep in mind that only Cinderhillians have children of any age.
Thus, the only alternative for you would be to play Cinderhillians. Please keep in mind that Cinderhill is not a standard family-driven environment but a community where raising children is a mutual responsibility of the entire village. [Back]

1.10 What happens if I'm late to the event?
If you are late to the event please be ready for additional delays. The delays can include, but are not limited to, transportation to the event site and logistical processing into the event site. We will take care of you as soon as logistically possible. [Back]

1.11 How long will I be in the game for?
The in-character time is from a few days to five days. You will, however need to be at the game area a few days before starting your game, to check in and participate in some workshops. The length of the game depends on your character and your own decision on how long you'd like to play. Please check the game schedule as not all the time is spent in-character. The whole game will last five days. [Back]

1.12 Can I sell my real-world wares at the event for real-world currency?
Yes, you can. Please note however, that there will not be any real world trading taking place during the event (or of course in the in-game site at all) itself. If you would like to sell your wares at the Staff Site either before or after the event please contact our Logistics team. Space is limited. Products that can be used for Dragonbane will be sold before the event and general products will be sold after the event. [Back]

2.1 Will I need to make a new costume and kit for Dragonbane?
Yes, and only costumes that specifically adhere to the requirements of the project will be allowed into in-game area. Participants who do not have the proper costuming for their character at the event will be denied entrance to the event area without a refund. Fortunately, the design of costumes for Dragonbane is one that many larpers are already familiar with. So it may be possible to use many existing garments, accessories and props that you may already have with little or no alteration. Shoes and boots, by far one of the most difficult and/or expensive garments to obtain will be based on common medieval patterns that can be obtained with reasonable ease.

Please see the costume page for further information on costuming including clothing styles, patterns and links to relevant costuming sites. [Back]

2.2 What should I bring with me to the event?
Enthusiasm and a positive attitude are the number one things you should bring. Also bring any prescription medicines or medical aids you require. There will be an 'out of character' camp as a staging area so you will need your camping equipment for sleeping (which will be modern for some participants). This equipment will be stored under safe conditions during the event. [Back]

2.3 Do I need to make any special preparations?
Yes, many roles will require training and guidance that will be provided by organizers. Several workshops will be available in your area with topics ranging from magical SFX to how to become a human of Valenor for a week. Please contact your National Coordinator for details. [Back]

2.4 What about 'out of character' items like glasses?
You will have to replace them with old style glasses frames appropriate to the game world or not wear them. 7-day (and longer) stay in contacts are also a possibility. Information on how to obtain old style eye-glasses is available here.. [Back]

2.5 Will I be able to bring a musical instrument or play one in the game?
If you bring your own musical instruments we require you to disguise modern production methods and materials. Please study the list of approved instruments for Dragonbane as well as information for methods of disguising or building your own instruments on the Dragonbane web site. Please note that if an instrument is not listed it will not be allowed into the in-game site. Please indicate on the participant form what instruments you are able to play and inform your Character Developer if you would like to bring one or play on one provided. [Back]

2.6 Will cameras be allowed in the in-game area?
Personal cameras and other anachronistic devices will not be allowed into the event area. There will be some CCTV cameras around the site for both security, documentary and SFX purposes. By attending the event you are giving consent for video footage and still pictures of you to be used for documentary purposes. [Back]

2.7 Can I bring my pet to the event?
Unfortunately not. No participant is allowed to bring their own animal(s) to the event. [Back]

3.1 Will I be able to interact with the dragon?
Absolutely! From conversation to battle the dragon is fully interactive. Battle with the dragon will be done with unique fantasy steel replica of tools historically used to fight and hunt other gigantic beasts, such as whales and elephants. [Back]

3.2 What will magic be like?
You will be able to see, hear, taste, touch and smell the magic in Dragonbane. Physical effects will be provided through effects specifically created for Dragonbane by trained special effects artists. Effects that are physically present, such as spells to control people, will be easily understood by the incantation. Some information on the magic system has been detailed in the rules section and further detailes will be provided in the near future. [Back]

3.3 Can we use real world fighting styles at Dragonbane?
Yes, but only those that can be used with latex weapons. No brawling, fisticuffs, martial arts or whatever you choose to call it is to occur at the event site. Anyone found participating in a real fight will be removed from the game without a refund. [Back]

3.4 Will there be referees during the game?
No. There are no referees in the event. In the case of emergencies, the organizers can be reached in the ways described here. [Back]

3.5 Can people steal stuff during the game?
During the event everything you sense can be interacted with. Though thievery is not pervasive in any of the factions in the larp it is possible. Any item stolen during the event is required to be either returned to the original owner or handed over to the organizers at the end of the event. A lost and found will be set up for participants to retrieve their items at the end of the event.

Anyone caught smuggling an item that does not belong to them will be considered to be stealing and will be dealt with per Swedish law. [Back]

3.6 What do I do if I have an injury?
The healers of the different factions will all have out of game medical training ranging from first aid to licensed medical doctors. If you have an injury that isn't serious please handle it in game- that is visit the healers while remaining in character. If you have have a serious injury (or any sort of live-threatening emergency) immediately use the "STAND DOWN" phrase to halt the game in your location and do whatever is necessary to either get to the healers or get the healers to you. Please look after each other. If you see such a situation occur please proactively halt the game and seek the necessary assistance. Immersion is a large part of this event but your safety is much more important to us. Refer to the safety rules for more information. [Back]

3.7 How will the game area be controlled?
Any problems should be resolved within the game as far as possible e.g. see the chief healer for any medical issues. Similarly see the in character law enforcement people if there is a dispute or call out the militia if an enemy attacks you. Pray if you want something - but keep it in character.

Access to the game area will be controlled to ensure you have everything you need to go in and to limit the possibility of 'out of character' spoilers. Similarly this will control people leaving the game area. The rules system is realistic in that fighting will be deadly. If your character is severely hurt you may die, and be forced to leave the game. Some characters, especially those murdered in cold blood, will be able to return in the night as ghosts, trying to sort their untimely demise. No participant will be allowed to come back as another character - so take care of each other. [Back]

3.8 Do the real-world laws of Sweden apply within the game area?
Absolutely. Anyone caught breaking the law will be turned over to the appropriate authorities. [Back]

4.1 Will food be provided by the organizers or will I have to bring my own?
Enough food for everyone at the event is provided by the organizers. There will also be sources for clean drinking water available. Food will be prepared by the participants in character, using methods and recipes from the world of Valenor, inspired by medieval ways. For further information on recipes and food, will become available. [Back]

4.2 Can Dargonabne really supply food for that many people for the whole game when other larps usually fail doing it?
Yes. The Dragonbane team has many years of experience in organizing large larps. At Dragonbane, the village of Cinderhill will for example have a bakery with equipment to ensure fresh bread for the players. Ingredients for other meals are provided and the players will make the food themselves. All the groups will have sufficient fireplaces and water for that and every player will get a bunch of good cooking recipes. [Back]

4.3 I’m allergic to hay/ nuts/ animals, can I come?
The Dragonbane project can’t guarantee a completely allergy free zone for every participant. We will naturally try to minimize the allergenic elements at the game site to the extent it is possible, for instace by not offering peanuts for cooking ingredients. Preventing allergenic substances from spreading in the open air scenario the game will be played is however impossible. The game location will carry particles of pollen, dust, herbs, animals and so on by nature. We can’t prevent wild animals from wandering in the game area. Therefore, it is the participants’ responsibility to inform the Dragonbane team of severe allergies and to take responsibility for bringing appropriate medication if available. We can help you by finding a character to minimize the risk, but finally it's up to the participant to decide whether the risks are acceptable. [Back]

4.4 How will hygiene be taken care of at the event?
Clean water sources are available in both the Staff Camp and the in game site. Participants can bring their own soap(s) as long as they fit the larp world. Any medieval-ish soap should do. Any necessary hygiene and/or sanitary items that a participant requires that cannot be modified to fit the genre of the larp must be kept in the participants bag marked with the 'offgame rune' when not in use. A sauna is available in the Staff Camp as well. [Back]

4.5 Will there be sex at the event?
The Dragonbane organization urges participants to refrain from being an active initiator of sexual contact. Situations of this sort are natural to occur, however, they require participants to exit the drama of the larp to either give consent or deny consent.

We've created an event that has no reasons for the larp to halt and would appreciate the participants' accord with that. While sex is a wonderful and natural thing, it is far too private to be role-played easily. [Back]

4.6 Will there be nudity at the event?
No aspect requires a participant to be nude at the event. However, nudity may occur, most specifically during bathing and partial nudity during Dragontamer mensur duels. [Back]

4.7 Will there be alcohol at the event?
Do not bring your own alcohol to the event. While it can be enjoyable to sit back and get drunk with your friends, new and old, around a campfire this will detract from the potential intensity of Dragonbane. Please visit our food page for further information about the beverages provided (will be available shortly). [Back]

4.8 Will there be drugs at the event?
Anyone caught with possession of controlled substances (i.e. illegal drugs) will immediately be removed from the event and placed in custody of the proper authorities. [Back]

4.9 Will there be tobacco at the event?
You are able to smoke pipe tobacco (in a pipe) during the event. Only smoking pipes are permitted. Smoking is only permitted around campfires to reduce the risk of a forest fire. Water pipes are allowed. Swedish snuff, snus, is not allowed, as is it not legal outside the borders of Sweden. Snuff in the form of chewing tobacco is allowed. [Back]

4.10 Will there be animals at the event?
Very likely there will sheeps and goats. There is also a high possibility of pigs, cows and geese around the village of Cinderhill. They will be supervised within the event and you will be able to interact with them if your character desires to. They are not to be food, and they are not there for us to be mean to. While we originally wanted to have horses at the event it has been decided that the event site chosen can be hard for horses.

Moose and bears have been sighted at the event location. However with the amount of humans about during the event it is not likely that any will be encountered. [Back]

5.1 What is a bag marked with the 'off-game' rune?
This is the one item within the in-game area that is out of game and off-limits. This bag is where you would keep such things as necessary medications, personal hygiene products and anything else a person truly cannot live without for up to a week. This bag should be a small pouch or bag, not a large rucksack or box. No in-game items may be stored in the Off-game bag at all. No participant is allowed to search through another persons Off-game bag. [Back]

5.2 What does the off-game rune look like?
